Over 100,000 people died in the Bosnian War, as a result of the disintegration of Yugoslavia, and it’s leader, Josip Tito, was not even alive. A dictator is someone who has taken control over a country and transformed it into a state of totalitarianism, usually by means of force, although Josip Tito not only had a strong military but a wide base of support that allowed him to arise. His policies and ideas were more liberal and he leaned towards a more democratic society, however there were various cases where his actions were oppressive that label him as an authoritative ruler. Tito is therefore a dictator, but his dictatorship was not in common regard of other oppressive rulers. Josip Tito was born the seventh of fifteen children in a peasant family from Croatia. …show more content…
Eventually Tito became the head of the Yugoslavian government after merging his council with the old governance. After the monarchy was abolished, Tito was elected president of the newly formed Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, where he stayed for the remainder of his life. Tito’s ascension to power came in most part from tenacious support of Yugoslavians, and western nations and the soviet union. There was Yugoslavian tension between communists, led by Tito, and royalist control that made conditions optimal for a dictator’s ascent. With support of a popular communist party, and aid from the western powers and the soviet union, he gained direct power over Yugoslavia by joining his council and the former Yugoslav government. This, along with widespread propaganda, impeded his landslide election for President of the new found Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
