Mustapha Mond is a controller for Western Europe, and he is one of the ten world controllers that are present in the World State in Brave New World. He is a “man of middle height, black-haired, with a hooked nose, full red lips, eyes very piercing and dark” (pg. 28). Mustapha Mond is considered to be a very high authority figure in this novel, because he is introduced as “fordship” and “Straight from the mouth of Ford himself”(pg. 29). Human nature in Brave New World is suggestions, according to the World State. Suggestions are voluntary, therefore when human beings are being conditioned, they are not voluntarily agreeing to this action, therefore whatever action is observed, we know that it is occurring due to the altercation of their human nature. The entire novel is set in a dystopian themed perfect reality, that can be seen as far from normal, as perfection is rarely achieved now in the 21st century. After humans are conditioned, since a young age, they begin to grow older and believe that homes are “stiflingly over-inhabited by a man, by a periodically teeming woman, by a rabble of boys and girls of all ages,” (pg. 31). and that there is “No air, no space; an understerilized prison; darkness, disease and smells,” (pg. 31). “Till at last the child’s mind is these suggestions, and the sum of the suggestions is the child’s mind. And not the child’s mind only. The adult’s mind too - all his life long. The mind that judges and desires and decides - made up of these suggestions. But all these suggestions are our suggestions!”. In this scene, the government, including the director, is implying that they are only suggesting opinions and ideas to the human. As a matter of fact, suggestions are voluntary, so it is hard to agree with this idea, because these babies are constantly being conditioned to think the way the directors want them to think and act upon that thought. If a child is constantly being reminded of one idea, they are not voluntarily acting upon this idea, they are remembering it, and beginning to believe it to be important. The director and factory workers are not suggesting, they are conditioning the human brain to think that these children have the freedom to make their own decisions, when they are just absorbing this information through brainwashing by the World
