Understood from article 1 and 2 that Joshua Robison’s case had led to a controversy that the existing law is not good enough. In another word, imprisonment sentence is too merciful towards offenders on sex with minors. For Robinson’s case, many felt that 4 years of imprisonment is not painful enough for him. However, the existing law is defending Robinson from getting a harsher punishment and thus, it is time to review and enhance the laws to ensure a deterrent effect on such acts so as to protect the younger generation. 4 out of 7 articles share a similarity which convey a strong stand on change of law. According to article 1, an online petition regarding Robinson’s punishment, received approximately 27,000 signatures as a recognition that his sentence is too lenient. Also, there were calls from the public for an appeal against the sentence imposed. Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam said “I do think that the sentences for such offences committed by Robinson need to be relooked at.” (Yi, Underage sex case: AGC not appealing against sentence, 2017) Article 5 relays that even lawyers proposed to enhance on the law as they felt that the existing law has neglected certain factors. Criminal lawyer Amolat Singh mentioned that something must be done to the law and Mr Eugene Thuraisingam, shared a same perspective by stating that current law does not draw a distinctive line between a young man who makes a mistake, and an older man who preys on young victims.
