Teenage rebellion is very common, usually lasting between the ages thirteen to early twenties. And like most teens, Muthoni rebelled against her parent's wishes by getting circumcised. Muthoni ended up dying from this mutinous act, causing a huge division between the two neighboring villages and their religions, Christianity and traditional Kenyan tribal beliefs. As a Christian leader, the new division left Joshua no other choice but for him to disown Muthoni. This decision to disown his daughter made him an improved leader by making his faith stronger, teaching his followers to not make the same mistake, and making him work harder to change the unconverted people's perspective on tribal beliefs. The newly converted Christians needed a strong leader that they could trust and make hard decisions. Joshua stepped up and made the …show more content…
Joshua's action of disowning his daughter was, without a doubt, the right decision to make. In order to stay the honorable leader he is known to be he needed to stay strong. Because of his substantial amount of courage, he strengthened the faith of his supporters. This faith does not only benefit the people already converted. Additionally, this denomination would also reach out to more people that need to be converted. In chapter 12 the narrator mentions Waiyaki's worries, which seems to surround the strength that Joshua's followers have gained over time. The narrator said, "(Christians) Led by Joshua and Kabonyi they had almost established Makuyu as their stronghold." Later in the chapter the narrator shifts focus to Joshua and his newfound confidence. It states, "The fire in Joshua gave new strength and hope to his followers.
