The homelessness number is at a staggering number 578,424 people (as of January 2014). As of January 2015 the number has come down to 564,708 people. Only a decrease of 13,716 in over a year is not enough. Some say that such high numbers are caused by drug abuse or misguided entitlement programs. Girl Scouts was a big part of my life when I was young and it really helped prepare me for the future in some ways. I learned a lot about responsibility during our famous cookie sales. For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…
On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. In my opinion, James O’connell – the president of BHCHP organization (Boston healthcare for the homeless people) – is one of the few people who really helps (or try to help) poor people and tries not just to fix their problems temporarily and put short-run bandages, but also tries to help them get out of poverty and show them future, which is not oriented on living in the street and thinking to get a bed for that night or have dinner (being oriented on just one day), but looking forward in the future. In the small town of Sheridan, Wyoming mostly in the summer you can pull into town and see a homeless person standing under the bridge of exit 20 holding up a sign asking for a ride to another town or sitting across the street from taco bell asking for money because they have none and they need to get their dog food. We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. Two years ago at Santa Ana, I saw a homeless man on a curb next to a parking lot of ABC Supermarket begging for money. I pitied him and reached out 3 dollars in my pocket and gave him my money.
