As I go on with the story I see that the narrator has to make a choice between the bass or Sheila, so I wonder which one? Maybe he’ll pick the bass. One reason is because he invests a lot of time in fishing. Putting a rod in the the water is described as second nature to him. Another reason is because he fished even before…

I have been living here at 100 Oakway dr. Richmond, VA for over a year now. As you know, I am in apartment number 2b with apartment number 32c above me. For 3 months now, I have been experiencing loud barking and banging from above. I know already that there should be no animals here in Oakway, but it seems to me that apartment number 32c is not aware, or are not concerned with the rules. I have made several attempts to speak to Ms. Dale about the dog and how loud they are, but she always tells me they are her kids and “kids will be kids.”…

Several days before the start of our last year in high school, my neighbor and I divided our time between hunting and surfing to end our summer. I really just wanted to go to the beach, but Johnny refused to give up the precious narrow window of time between the start of deer season and the start of the school year. One day, he came into our house uninvited. He charged into my room with a rifle in his hands to wake me up at five in the morning to sit in the deer stand with him that we had set up in the deep, swampy woods behind our houses. This was a normal occurrence of his, seeing as nobody locked their doors in this little hicktown, especially not my mother.…

Spoon River, a small little town full with people who are seen in the light and dark. Unfortunately, I came from a family who was seen in the dark within the public eyes. Yes, growing in in the south, during the 40’s and where seeing cows and farmers was the norm, came with racial situations because both of my parents, Lisa and Marvin Smith, were African Americans educational teachers. My home was very small but was full with love because of my parents were at a point, in their life, where nothing on the outside mattered more than showing each other love, support and raising me to have strength and be prepared for the outside. Growing up was difficult because I wasn’t able to play in certain parks, water fountains and even walking on a different side of the streets.…

[cut to closeup of ground] a pair of white tennis shoes with pokeballs sewn into the tongues (they are also "pump" shoes and have rainbow shoelaces) a small bit of foam lands onto the ground inbetween the shoes as camera pans up to reveal white sweatpants with yellow-brown stains around crotch. another spat of foam falls past frame. panning continues past black sweatshirt reading I DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE (I DO WHAT I WANT TO is written on the back) with little miniature rainbows centered underneath both phrases on both sides. camera slows pan as festering sounds begin to infiltrate audio and skin appears from neck of sweatshirt leading to acne-ridden and acne-scarred brostubble. camera appears almost afraid to move further as first flecks of foam falling from floundrous face come into slow surly cinematic existence, festering noise getting louder with pained breathing adding to the mix before panning out to reveal a face covered with sebum and semen in equal parts, rabid cummy foam emanating from both sides of mouth, covering most of its two chins, preparing to drop again, face is expressionless or perhaps with an expression a catfish with fetal alcohol syndrome would employ…

We moved to Cache Valley the summer before I started 5th grade. My parents found a house at the top of a hill on River Heights Boulevard. The backside of the house had large view windows that looked over “the island,” the river bottom and housing subdivisions. On an adjacent hill to the northwest was the Logan Temple. The little town of River Heights sat on the benches above the Logan river.…

“On the Rainy River” is a story describing the narrator, Tim O’Brien, conforming to the society surrounding him; while continuing to question internally. O’Briens drastic tension of self morals alongside the differentiated pressure of conforming to the society’s desire for him to fight for his country, has left O’Brien with the fear of exile, abandonment, the fear of being ashamed; all of which, are considered far worse than the fear of death. O’Briens inner turmoil is of direct correlation to how society's peer pressure shall overcome one’s self morals. O’Brien’s character is a man who follows alongside the society's boundaries. Having graduated from “Macalester College” to working a low paying job at the “Armour meat packing plant” during…
