Niggli portrays how one choice can affect the rest of the stranger's life by characterization. The stranger starts out mysterious and unapproachable. He goes up to Sarita’s chaperone and smooth talks his way into dancing with Sarita. He and Sarita start talking about the conflicts between the two villages. The villages of San Juan Iglesias and Hidalgo have been at odds ever since three men from Hidalgo stole something very valuable to San Juan Iglesias. “They attempted to steal the bones of Don Romolo Balderas”(443). Don was the greatest historian in the entire republic and every student read his books. The Hidalgo people believe that since Don was born in Hidalgo, that is where his bones should rest. The San Juan Iglesias people believe that since Don died in San Juan Iglesia, his bones should stay where he died. Pepe Gonzalez was one of the three men that stole the bones and he regrets his choice since the plan failed. Pepe Gonzalez brought some cheese to the party for Sarita. Late into the night someone ate the cheese, asked where it came from, and when no one could figure it out until Old Tio Daniel said it was from Hidalgo. He asked the party goers “Then where did that cheese come from?” (445). No one said it was the stranger, but all at once they turned their heads back to Satira but the stranger was
