Joseph Stalin, “man of steel,” was either considered a hero or a cold blooded killer. His rise to dictatorship and communist reign led to the death and suffering of millions. He fought his way into power and it all began at a very young age. Stalin’s childhood was shaky and unstable, but that did not keep him from reaching his intended goals of being dictator. Joseph (losif) Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili was born December 18th, 1879 in the small Georgian town of Gori within the Russian Empire. He was born to his mother, Ekaterina Gheladze, and his father, Vissarion Dzhugashvili. Not knowing what next step to take, the Nazi war continued east. In 1942 began the Battle of Stalingrad, where German troops created a bloody battle. During the battle, Stalin did not allow any evacuations to occur. No matter the age or sex. In the year 1944, the Soviets invaded the Germans and victory comes for the Soviet soldiers. Some of the Soviet soldiers celebrated their victory by raping and potentially murdering German refugees. Stalin was aware of their actions and simply stated they had won a great war and did not deserve to be lectured (Rees, 2011). After the war, the Soviet Union’s allies, United States, Britain, and France became their enemies (Service, 2005). According to the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin died on March 6th, 1953. He suffered from a hemorrhage to his brain at age 73. When the announcement was made involving his death, some cheered and some wept for they had lost their leader once again. Even though concluding the wars, Gulags, prison camps, and the many irrationalized deaths totaled up to be twenty million people.
