Joseph Stalin had a rough childhood. His father was a poor shoemaker and made little money. His father was an alcoholic and abused Stalin when he was a child. Stalin’s original name was Losif Jughashvili. He changed his name to Stalin, which means “steel”, because it sounded more intimidating. At the age of 7 he contracted smallpox, he survived, but his body was covered in horrible scars. Stalin joined seminary to become a priest. Although he was later expelled because he couldn’t pay for exams which had dramatically increased in price.

Since Hitler had agreed, Stalin had had time to build up the Soviet army. World War 2 had officially begun. Hitler went behind Stalin’s back and attacked the Soviet Union because he didn’t like what Stalin was doing. Stalin joined up with the Allies in order to defeat Germany. After World War 2 ended Stalin established governments in countries, which had previously been controlled by Germany. That sparked the start of the Cold War. The Cold War was a battle between the 2 major superpowers of the world, the United States and the Soviet Union.
