Joseph Stalin was born on December 18,1878, he was born into a poor family and was an only child. His father was a shoemaker, an his mom was a laundress. As a young child he contracted smallpox, which left him with many facial scars.When Stalin was in his teens he got a scholarship to a seminary in a city called Tblisi to study priesthood, in the Georgian Orthodox Church. In his free time there he secretly started reading the Communist Manifesto, by Karl Marx. He shortly got expelled for not doing his work, and instead got into the revolutionary against the Russian monarchy. He started to do things for the revolution, he was imprisoned many times. When he was in his 30's he changed his name from Josef Vissarionovich Djugashvili, to Stalin

In 1915 Bolsheviks took over Russia. The Soviet Union was founded in 1922, as Lenin as the first leader. At this time Stalin was the secretary general of the Central Committee. After the Bolshevik leader Vladimar Lenin died in 1924, Stalin saw his chance to take control of the party, and he took it by outplaying and killing his rivials. Once in power, he collectivized farming and had potential enemies executed and sent to forced labor camps. Stalin was the dicator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics also known as the USSR. Russia became a military super-power, and a industrial super-power, while Stalin was in power. He was put fear into many people, he ruled by terror and killed millions of his own citizens during his regin. He took over all of the farms, those that refused to cooperate were killed, which alos lead to a large famine. In the 1930's Stalin instituted the Great Purge, a series of campaigns designed to rid the Communist Party, the military and other parts of Soviet society from those he considered a threat. He alos builded cults about him, had cities renamed in his honor. He had the Russian history book rewritten to say that he was a great man, who had a large part in the revolt.
