Many countries were in the middle of depressions. None of the countries were getting anywhere and they were all looking for a way out. Dictators began to speak out promising that they would make their countries as prosperous as they were during their prime. Stalin was born on December 18, 1879. The son of Besarion Jughashvili a cobbler and Ketevan Geladze a washerwoman. During his early life he was faced with a rough upbringing. He contracted smallpox at age 7 and left his whole face scared, he was injured in a carriage accident which disfigured his left arm, and other children from other villages treated him harshly for his disfigurements. It was not until 1912 when Stalin joined the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party. The Bolshevik took control of Russia in 1917 and in 1922 the Soviet Union was founded. Vladimir Lenin was appointed leader of the Soviet Union in 1922. During the time Joseph Stalin became more and more respected in the party. He was soon given the job secretary general of the Central Committee of the Communist Party where he would choose allies and gain political support. In 1924 Lenin died and Stalin saw his opportunity to seize total control of the Soviet Union. He slowly was able to drive out the old leadership of the Soviet Union and substituted his own. He launched a series of plans to help the Soviet Union into an industrial powerhouse. He ruled with terror and killed anyone that opposed him. Millions of people were out of jobs, people were still upset after their loss in the war and the economy was at an all time low.
