Joseph Stalin, the dictator of the USSR ( Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) between 1929 and 1953, was born Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili (იოსებ ბესარიონის ძე ჯუღაშვილი) in Georgian but Josef Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili (Иосиф Виссарионович Джугашвили) in Russian. He was born in Gori, Georgia, which was then part of the Russian empire on the 18th of December 1878. However, he made a new birthdate up for himself claiming that he was born on the 21st of December 1879. He had an exceedingly tough childhood as his family were very poor and he was an only child. Stalin was the leader of the Communist party from 1922 he then rose to power in 1924 until his death in 1953. When the party overthrew the Tsar in 1917, Vladimir Lenin took over and started the long reign of dictatorship. When Lenin died, however, lots of people wanted the position. If you didn’t agree with him and his government, and they found out, you would be sent to labour or concentration camps called Gulags by Stalin’s secret police force known as NKVD or Narodny Komissariat Vnutrennikh Del which translates to People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs or were executed. This meant that he created the worst man-made famine in …show more content…
Just before, in 1939, Hitler and Stalin made a pact. Hitler, however broke his promise by invading Russia. He severely underestimated Stalin’s power and the siege that followed, the battle of Stalingrad, lasted five months, one week and three days. By this time, neither side had much food. Eventually, German troops surrendered.
By the end of World War Two, the USSR had lost over 20 million men which was much more than any other country. This led to Stalin demanding most of the countries in Eastern Europe. He got his wish and the USSR now stretched to the Baltic and the Adriatic Sea.
How Stalin died, is a complete mystery. Although historians tend to lean towards the idea that he was poisoned, there is significant evidence to show that he died from an Intracerebral Hemorrhage or a bleeding in the brain. He had been suffering from ill health for quite a long time but at his final dinner, Stalin was with four members of his Politburo and it is highly likely that this is where the alleged poisoning happened.
However he died, one thing that is known for certain is that he died on March, 5
