Joseph McCarthy was born in 1908. He was the fifth put of seven children. When Joseph was young he was not very popular. He was normally very shy and awkward when it came to talking to people. After grade school, he became a chicken farmer. When his career of being a farmer came to an end, he finally enrolled in high school around the age of 20. One year later he graduated high school. He attended Marquette University to become an engineer. After another career change he stayed at the same college, but enrolled at Marquette Law School. He was very young compared to the others in his class. His first jump into the law career was as a democratic candidate for district attorney, but when he was unsuccessful he did not want to give up. He joined with the hopes that it would help him in his political career later in life. It was when he was still in active duty that he started he campaign for the U.S Republican Senate. Unfortunately, he was defeated in his first run, but once again he was not giving up easy. So, once again he in 1946 he ran against a man named Robert M LA. Follete. During this campaign, he decided it was the perfect time to use his service in the World War against his opponent. So, he attacked his opponent for not participating in the war. He exclaimed to people that while he was in Europe fighting for his country and risking his life, is opponent was making a profit. Which was accusing Robert Follete of war profiteering. After his arguments about him being in the war he won the primary votes 207,935 to 202,557. He was the youngest member of the senate.
