Jones makes an image of God when he attempts to produce miracles, this can be seen when he heals the blind and making a paralysed woman walk again. It was later proven that it was a setup, meaning that the people were neither paralysed nor blind. Jones was able to break any belief that his followers had in God, by making himself seem like a God. Jones did this by throwing a bible as if it was a football through the church and claims that if God is real, he would strike the bible with lightning.
Time-
Jones kept his followers busy, as they were constantly doing chores early in the morning until late at night. This left them exhausted and unable to think for themselves. One follower quoted saying “I didn’t have time to think for myself,

At first, Jones looked after his followers by spending their money to create a happy and cheerful community. Eventually, over time people wanted to leave but were unable to leave Jonestown as they had no money. The followers had become so reliant on Jones to look after them they stop worrying about money.
Discipline-
Adults who were slacking off at work were forced to partake in public boxing matches against much superior opponents, which lasted hours. Jones was known for disciplining people who attempted to leave Jonestown. If he seen teenagers holding hands he would beat them.
Sexuality-
Jones sexually abused his followers to gain an intimate relationship with them. He frequently enforced woman to have sexual interactions with him as a way to gain power and control over them. A male follower was quoted saying that Jones wanted to F*** him in the ass if he wanted.
Intimacy-
Jones would separate the children from their families, additionally, wives would be separated from their husbands. This insulated the followers and made them think for themselves instead of their family, as they could not communicate with others. This therefore reduced loyalty and the intimacy with each other, but increased it with Jim
