In America, there are approximately 37 million Americans who live in poverty (Issues & Controversies); as well as 4 million of the Americans who live in poverty have disabilities (Wohl). Also there are 5 million Americans who are homeless, and 43 million without Health Insurance. With America’s economy hundreds of thousands lose their job, losing the money they use to put a roof over their head, and food on the table (Issues & Controversies). While working at the Joseph House Food Bank, I encountered hundreds of people, from homeless, unemployed, those with disabilities, as well as veterans. I attend Abundant Rain Ministries in Coweta, Oklahoma; our church has a food bank called the Joseph House. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and the first and last Saturday of every month from 9am to 12pm, we give away food to those in need in the Coweta area. Working at the Joseph house has effected the way I see those around me, by analyzing my audience. Although not everyone is an open book, making it to where someone else can see exactly what is going on in their personal life. Being that not people, openly express how they’re feeling, or discussing the issues the face at hand with another person. I believe, that no matter the amount service provided, there is never enough help. The Joseph House helps provide food for a month, we package food that is donated from local grocery stores, or that our church purchases through our fundraisers; the issue at hand is the little amount that we are given isn’t always enough. Although we are blessed beyond measures, and have the opportunity to give to those in need, there seems to never be enough to go around. Several times, I watched the leaders have to explain to people who had already received food from the food bank once already this month, that due to having low amounts of resources we were unable to provide the resources. American’s have faced the issue of not having, the sources or funds to provide for themselves and their families, since the Great Depression. Presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Barak Obama, have established many social programs such as Social Security and Unemployment Assistance, to help assist Americans (Issues & Controversies). Being that there are other forms of assistance from the government, which can be helpful to those who can get the assistance. From the standing point on those the government doesn’t always provide assistance, such as the homeless All of the faculties that provide assistance to those in need, are mainly community based.
