Catch 22 is often a phrase used to describe difficult situations when frustration builds. Merriam Webster defines a catch 22 as “A difficult situation for which there is no easy or possible solution“ (Merriam-Webster). In the book Catch-22 many characters face these difficult situations as they fight in World War II under harsh command of their leaders. Catch-22 has been challenged many times throughout the years as most books have been but with with the topics Catch-22 covers, war and government flaws, it is often the center of controversy and provokes people's emotions. The anti-war novel gives great detail to battle scenes and life as a soldier to which military men and women today might be able to have a closer connection with. Benny Suggs executive director of NC State alumni association and retired naval aviator read Catch-22 during his sophomore year at NC State University and again after serving in the United States Army. In his podcast on NC State libraries website he tells his reaction and analysis of Catch-22. “Because now it had an even greater relevance to me (...) a lot of people referred to my squadron as being crazy.“ (Suggs). This goes on to show how many people can relate to the text and the descriptions that are provided by Joseph Heller are realistic representations of what happens. Later on in the podcast Suggs referred to the text as “really funny” because of the satire that was present throughout. To hear a proud veteran whose family has served for generations proclaim an anti-war novel as “funny” was quite interesting, it just goes to show the book can be interpreted many ways and is appreciated by most for the accuracy of the war descriptions it gives. However surprisingly there are some people that perceive the book
