19 October 2014 Joseph Conrad was born on December 3, 1857, in Berdichev, Ukraine. His parents, Apollo and Evelina were Polish patriots apart of the noble class who conspired against the oppressive Russian rule of the time. As a consequence, they were arrested and forced to live in the Russian province of Vologda with their 4-year-old son, Joseph Conrad. They Conrad's education was erratic. First, he started being tutored by his literary father. When Conrad's parents died several years after being sent to Russia, he was raised by his uncle in Poland. Conrad then, attended school in Krakow and received further private schooling. At the age of sixteen though, Conrad left Poland and traveled to the port city of Marseilles, France. Conrad wrote Heart of Darkness as a framed narrative. The narrator is conveying the story of another man who is telling his story. This allows for Marlow's divergences; and also for the readers to understand the terror of the darkness for ourselves. Conrad's impressionist style enables the reader to experience the journey as Marlow does. As Marlow looks deeper into universal darkness, we the readers follow and question what Marlow questions. Conrad's style helps the reader to build a powerful narrative association with Marlow because the reader can feel what he feels. Allowing the reader to understand the truth of the darkness. Conrad's mastery of symbolism paints the central theme of the novel. Kurtz himself is a major symbol in Heart of Darkness. Kurtz is considered a spark for change and the symbol for the whites' futility in Africa. Kurtz is unaware of his own darkness and is unable to fight it. His dying words, "the horror, the horror!" depicts the darkness of human
