American writer Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” The writer’s words taught me what it means to be a patriot. I have a handful of relatives who currently serve in the military, and even some that have passed due to war related incidents. It’s nearly impossible to find someone without a tear in their eye when a flag is given to the widow of a fallen soldier. That’s when you stop and realize that, that person was not only a soldier, but a husband, a father, a friend. To have the audacity and bravery to risk your life for something you believe in, not only for yourself but for the rest of your country. That’s what a hero is. It’s easy for a person
