The book starts with the female character describing her community. A place that is not as safe as people think. They have walls around their city for protection, but it’s not going to stop the thieves and dangerous people from coming to their house. While Lauren’s mother was pregnant, she took some drugs, called Einstein and that cause Lauren to get hypermpathy that makes her to feel the pain and the pleasure of others.” Butler delivers a heroine who must think of the pain she causes others, because she will literally feel it herself, and a heroine who must overcome a disability in order to succeed and survive”(Zaki). While at first this disability makes Lauren seems weak, but through the end the hypermpathy makes her to become stronger and since she can feel other pain that makes her to become gentler toward others than before. It makes her to look at the people around her as humans and not aliens and so she help people who need help, people who later on turn back the favor and stay by her
