Joseph Brodsky: Sympathy For Reading Books

Improved Essays
Joseph Brodsky said, “There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” A lot of people have an apathy for reading. When you read you gain so much knowledge without even realizing it. Reading laconic books from when you were in kindergarten like, “Goodnight Moon,” taught you how to appreciate everything around you. Reading notification or fiction you could still learn something. The things that you know now, are things that you learned when you were younger. Do you remember the, Three Little Pigs? Maybe even, Goldilocks and the Three Bears? These were days, when you were read to by either, your early childhood teacher or parent. Those books interest me so much, one day I learned how to read and I read those books …show more content…
There is a point where you start liking people more than just being friends. You start to look different, you try different things, and you stop reading books because it’s not cool. What I’m describing, is a place called middle school. In middle school, we read all the time. Well, they read and I stared at the book. The Hobbit was one of the books we read. I wish I could tell you about it, but I was not moved by it one bit. In 8th grade, is when I found out that I like reading, just not every category. My favorites, were teen suspense and teen romance. Speak, was a phenomenal book. It portrayed some many aspects of a typical teenage life. A man named, W. Somerset Maugham said, “The only important thing in a book is the meaning that it has for you.” My current reading status, is not in the books. I typically read online, whether it is news, social media, and song lyrics. I have not read a book since April, I read Hamlet. That story has a lot of issues and kind of relates today’s reality. Just because I liked Hamlet, does not mean that I love reading books. I only read if I have to because i find it being very lethargic. One day I will overcome my stubborn feelings towards reading

To answer this question, I kept thinking back to the books I read as a child, such as The Magic Tree House and Dear America series. I was addicted to reading as a child and that love has continued until today. I think one of the main purposes of children 's literature is to encourage children to want to continue reading throughout their lives, and by doing so, they will learn more about the world around them and learn to explore their imagination. The books I read definitely did this for me. In The Magic Tree House series, I was taken on adventures to castles, into jungles and onto the Titanic.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

People will always tell you to read to help you to improve, whether it be your teachers or your parents. Nowadays, kids and teens are always on their electronic devices and you can’t tell if they are really reading or just messing around. The article “Reading Literature Makes Us Smarter and Nicer” by Annie Murphy Paul argues that reading can help us improve our minds. She argues that “deep reading” is something we have to protect like a historical painting or a historical building, because it immerses you greatly. Deep reading is a robust exercise that the brain does to increase our empathy in real life.…

It’s exciting plot and meaningful themes led me to see reading in a whole new light. I realized that fiction is not only useful for entertainment, but also for learning about the world. With this revolutionary state of mind, I sought out books such as Lord of the Flies and 1984. Just last year, I read Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, which once again proved to me that novels are nearly as useful for learning about the world and developing one’s character as nonfiction books. With this new perspective in mind, I am excited to discover more books to once again captivate me and consume my…

I remember the best part of reading was when I would finish a whole page in a book my mom and dad would sometimes let me stay up later, or I could have one piece of candy out of the candy jar. I believe that they younger a child is when they start reading the better off they will be when they enter school. In the article “Reading Remains the Key to Success” by Alonzo Weston, it is mentioned that it’s important for a child to grow up in a house full of books. Weston says “not many things bother me more than to walk in a home where children live and not see a book in sight.” (Page 1) I completely agree with that.…
