Josef Mengele was an SS officer and physician at the famous concentration camp Auschwitz. Mengele is responsible for thousands of murders alone, being a selector (a Nazi who decided which prisoners would be gassed and which prisoners would die by forced labor) and being the physician for the camp. He experimented on prisoners as if they were lifeless human beings, with no remorse.
Josef Mengele was born March 16th, 1911 in Günzburg, Germany. In 1935 he earned his Ph.D. in physical anthropology at the University of Munich. In January 1937, Mengele became the assistant of Dr. Otmar von Verschuer, at the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene. In the same year, Mengele joined the Nazi Party. He was spotted at Mauthausen-Gusen (concentration camp) and was eventually captured and held in a POW camp near Munich. Mengele received papers from Dr. Fritz Ulmann, a fellow prisoner, and was released because the American Army didn’t realize he was a member of the SS. Mengele hid in a farm for three years but then escaped to Argentina. There he had a number of aliases including; Fritz Ulmann, Fritz Hollmann, Helmut Gregor, G. Helmuth, Jose Mengele (real original), Ludwig Gregor, and lastly, Wolfgang Gerhard. In 1954 he divorced Irene. Four years later he married his brother, Karl’s, widow; Martha Mengele. On June 7th, 1959 Germany issued its’ first arrest warrant for Mengele. Apparently this scared him because he quickly moved to Paraguay the same year. In 1964 his academic and medical degrees were withdrawn by the Universities of Frankfurt and Munich. Mengele is believed to have died 15 years later on February 7th, 1979; suffering a stroke while swimming in the ocean. It is assumed that his remains were buried in Embu, Brazil in a grave marked “Wolfgang Gerhard” (One of his aliases).
