Mengele earned rank as chief doctor of the camp. This gave the privilege of Mengele to maim or kill his subjects. During his time in camp he earned the nickname, “The Angel of Death.” This was because of his cruel demeanor, and the way he looked down at you like you were nothing; another reason was because of his charming looks, snappy outfit, and his enjoyment to his terrible duty. Unlike the rest of the SS, Mengele loved selection duty. Trainloads of Jewish people would arrive and if Mengele swung his baton to the right, they lived. To the left, they died. With a quick decision, your life was at stake. Mengele was usually “off-duty” when a new trainload of jewish prisoners arrived, mostly because he was looking for twins. Mengele had become closely interested in “making use of” twins in his research and experiments; both fraternal and identical, to trace genetic diseases. Dr. Mengele had many other research interests such as Heterochromia iridum, when two eyes differ in color. (Throughout his stay in Auschwitz, Mengele would collect the eyes of those he murdered; he was trying to unlock the “key” to changing eye color).
