Identifying Parenting Styles Did you know that there are different parenting styles? From the rising to fame "tiger-momming" to the infamous "helicopter" parenting, many other styles exist in between these two styles. Though, there are formal names for the two aforementioned styles. Tiger-momming is less known as authoritarian parenting known for its strictness and lack of affection shared between parents and their offspring, while “helicopter” parenting is a sub-style of authoritative parenting, which is known for being a balance between strict and loving. Permissive parenting is the complete opposite of authoritarian parents and is common in today’s world of busy schedules and parents who feel that they do not spend enough time with their children (Lloyd). These parents are more often than not low in control but high in responsiveness (Ernst). They are not restrictive and do not impose many maturity demands, preferring to apply high responsiveness levels (Marsiglia et al). They could go either ways with their children’s needs, either fulfilling and indulging or flat out neglecting them (Marsiglia et al). Permissive parents can be incredibly lenient and take care of their children’s needs and requests immediately (Ernst). They prefer to try to be their children’s friend rather than their parent, not wanting to be the disciplinarian, despite sometimes feeling as if their children walk over them (Allen and Sprain). In school, students from authoritarian homes tend to perform rather well (Marsiglia et. al). They also tend to not use problem behaviors as much in comparison to students from permissive homes (Marsiglia et. al). As well as less participation in problem behaviors, children may become obedient, respectful, and compliant (Morgenegg). Naturally, authoritative parents have more positives to the parenting type they utilize than the other types. For example, children’s self-will will be respected as well as balanced within disciplined conformity (Morgenegg). Also, authoritative parenting has been shown to be overall the most successful style in not only academics, but also social-emotional development as well as behavioral development (Lloyd). With their parents’ help, children learn to be more responsible for themselves as well as to think about the consequences that come with their behavior
