Jose was born on December 23, 1893 in San Vicente, El Salvador. He was a Salvadorian army colonel and diplomat. He saved at an estimate of 50,000 European Jews from Nazi persecution by providing false Salvadorian papers. He was in the Salvadorian military for over 26 years. He was later approached from a Jewish man. Asking Castellanos for help on saving him and his Jewish family. He got them fake Salvadorian papers and saved that family from the death camp Auschwitz, that was his first experience. Then, he later realized that was what he wanted to do, save as many Jewish people as he can. In 1942 Castellanos became the Salvadoran General Consul in Geneva and appointed Mandel-Mantello the consulate’s “First secretary”. Mandel-Mantello proposed to Castellanos that they issue Salvadoran documents to save Jews. They either charged little or nothing while some Latin American countries were sold for high prices. I do not think Dr. Fend should get the award since he was caught and was punished for his “disobedience”. Another reason is because he never told anyone about what he had done, his daughter had found out after 15 years of research. I think that because since he made it obvious and he got caught which gave him a punishment by the Chinese Government. I don’t think Irene Opdyke should get the award since she only saved 16 people. Jose Castellanos saved 50,000 people and Irene saved 16, so that is my reason for Irene not to get the award. I do not think Gilberto Saldivar should get the award since he ended up getting himself and his family arrested and in prison in one year. He was caught and he was in prison, which put his family in danger. And this is why I think Jose Castellanos should get the Courage to Care

Many would argue that a murderer shouldn’t receive an award of bravery, however, I believe it is important to view all sides of a story. On that note, I am recommending Zinaida Portnova for The Harper Lee Moral Courage Award. Portnova was a seventh grade student when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, and hated the Germans after an incident where Nazi troops hit her grandmother while confiscating cattle. After this event, she sought justice through joining the Young Avengers, a Belarusian resistance movement with the Komsomol organization. She went on to kill upwards of 100 German soldiers in an operation where she sabotaged actions at a pump, brick factory, and local power plant.…
