Jorge Mario Bergoglio Research Paper

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the 266th elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013, becoming Pope Francis. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. Prior to becoming elected Bergoglio served as archbishop of Buenos Aires from 1998 to 2013, as a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church of Argentina from 2001-2013 and as president of the Bishops’ Conference of Argentina from 2005 to 2011. When elected the 266th pope, the first pope from the Americas, Bergoglio took his papal title from Saint Francis of Assisi of Italy. His tenure is characterized by humility and outspoken support of the world’s poor and marginalized people. He was born unto Italian immigrant parents. As a child he was very ill and had surgery to remove one of his lungs due to a serious infection. He graduated from school as a chemical technician before beginning his training at the Diocesan Seminary of Villa Devoto. In 1958 he entered the novitiate of the society of the Society of Jesus. When at the Immaculate Conception College he taught psychology and literature in Santa Fe from 1964-1965.
