In her article “Is Sugar Really THAT Bad For Us?” Jordanna Levin addresses the negative effects of fructose, including weight gain, a risk of type 2 diabetes, and sugar addiction. The article took a negative stance on sugar as in “Sugar is poison” and “Sugar is killing us” (Levin, 2017). Published on a website called “I Quit Sugar”, the article aims to persuade people to completely eliminate sugar from their diet with the help of their “I Quit Sugar 8-Weeks Program”. However, the article is potentially unreliable because the author, Levin is not a certified nutritionist. Levin is a recipe developer, cook, speaker, writer, and editorial manager for IQuitSugar.com.
It seems that the purpose of the website’s posts is to market their “I Quit Sugar 8-Weeks Program”.

However, research had shown it has little effect on body weight and waist circumference although it increases liver fat content and visceral fat deposition (Tashkinen et al., 2017). This is because the body adapts by reducing energy storage and increasing metabolism and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system (Inam, Ikram, Shireen & Haleem, 2016). Thus it is a misconception to link high fructose intake with weight gain. Levin provided a counter argument as a way to persuade the audience more. She states that fat does not actually cause weight gain, but sugar does. However, it is found that sugary food with high-fat contents like cake and pastries is what causes weight gain, rather than pure sugar, like candies, soda, and syrup (Markus, Rogers, Brouns & Schepers, 2017). This implies that high consumption of fat is what causes weight gain, rather than just pure sugar. Levin’s claim is valid in that high level of fructose is unhealthy as it can cause fatty liver. However, Levin used this explanation beyond its context by stating that fat from the liver cause weight
