Many different cults have existed for many years. Some cults are peaceful while other cults can be violent and intense. One cult that ended in severity was the Peoples Temple based in Jonestown, Guyana. This particular cult was led by a man named Jim Jones. Jones had strong views on equality and wanted to create a place where people of all ages, races, and sexual orientations could live together in peace, therefore he started the Peoples Temple. The Temple was established in Indianapolis in the 1950’s. The Temple seemed to be a sort of Utopia and attracted many people who were longing for a sense of belonging. The first thirty-five to fifty residents of Jonestown were primarily young men who spent their time cutting down trees and clearing the land to begin building. By 1977, there were sixty cottages, large kitchens and food storage areas, laundry rooms, an infirmary, two schoolhouses, and a large pavilion used for societal meetings. The cult members that escaped were no longer under the spell of Jim Jones and his teachings. The former headquarters building in San Francisco was demolished by the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. Society learned many important lessons from studying the structure and beginnings of Jim Jones and his cult.
