Satire is a very important and useful genre of literature that is used everyday to express mockery, irony and humor. Jonathan Swift first introduced satire when he wrote an open letter to England during the Great Irish Potato Famine explaining his solution to end the starvation that had spread all throughout Ireland. His plans to keep his people from dying out involved getting newborn babies plump off of breast milk and then eating the newborns. After receiving the letter from Swift, England sent food to the starving people. Ireland has never been as populated since then.

Trump’s supporters believe that he is telling the truth about everything even though Politifact checked 77 of his statement and rated 76 percent of them come out as false. I understand that Trump is a very entertaining because he makes a fool of himself, but I don’t believe that he is someone that should run the country. Yes, he’s has made more money than most of us will make in a lifetime, but he has also lost a huge amount. You can’t run a country like a business, no matter how well you believe it’ll work. Satire helps keep the humor in the world, making people laugh when their day has been rough. John Oliver’s thoughts on Trump are spot on and he showed us that when he broadcasted the Donald trump takedown America has been waiting for. For the people who dislike trump, this was a win. Oliver keeps the satire coming, even if it makes people upset, he doesn’t care. He’s having fun ripping Trump

This editorial reminds me of a childhood bully. The definition of bullying is to use influence to intimidate someone as teasing, name calling, stereotyping, fighting, and exclusion, spreading rumor, public shaming and aggressive intimidation. This comedian displayed this behavior in his assumption of Barron Trump. He should be held accountable for his poor response and his tasteless behavior. Regardless of whom a person is or even who they may be related to we should show respect for one another.…

Satire in Moliere and Swift The Oxford Dictionary defines Satire as “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.” Satire is a literary way of providing possible change to humanity and its institutions. In Swift’s A Modest Proposal and Moliere’s Tartuffe, the two authors indirectly ridicule and criticize human characteristics and behavior but with the aim of trying to make them improve instead of demolishing them. In Swift’s A Modest Proposal, Swift through the fictional character satirizes the cruel behavior between Irish Catholics and English Protestants in the English led Ireland (Puchner eta al., 72).…

His comments were hypocritical, and he was pro-women until the truth about his conduct was exposed to the public. Saturday Night Live then slipped in their own feelings on the sexual misconduct by claiming “I hope you get what’s coming to you” (3:29). Aside from their comical reputation, SNL still makes a point to address the serious issue and that it isn’t a funny topic. Even though they addressed the issue in the industry, the video is an understatement of the true issue. Because the video is comical, it can make the sexual harassment issue seem like a less serious problem in the…

Colbert makes homophobia seem single-minded, sexists look like Neanderthals, censorship childish, and Racists as outdated and unwanted as the United States’ Postal Service. As I stated earlier satire is a complicated form of comedy, as an example the Stephen Colbert you have likely seen today on the Colbert Report is not actually what the man is like off camera. Though I know from news interviews of Colbert being out of character that he is Catholic, from the South, but is not conservative, obviously. (BIO, n.d) Colbert’s humor is viewed as liberal satire, meaning it makes conservatives look like uninformed idiots. Colbert is also known to rip on major slam talk show hosts like Bill O’Reilly, which make sense because Colbert created his character to be just as obnoxious as Bill O’Reilly…

In Jonathan Swift's novel, Gulliver's travels, Swift interprets the current political situation in England by adopting satire into each civilisation in the book, as a way of attacking the ideals of his country and representing the flaws in the monarchy. He approaches this by not only mirroring political problems in a bizarre fashion, but writes what ideally should be utopian lands as those that show the defects in what humans believe to be a perfect society. In each book the civilisation Gulliver arrives to is flawed in some fashion, making Swift's political approach stand out as he doesn’t believe an ideal society exists, so therefor doesn’t write one. Gullivers main observations and Swift’s most direct criticism include the Lilliputians backwards court customs, the Houyhnhnms’…
