Jonas's Memories In 'The Giver'

Can you imagine a world without the things you see and use every day. What if you couldn’t see color, the sun, wildlife, and all the things we take for granted. In “The Giver” this futuristic world was designed to be perfect. Every one would have sameness and life would be boring. Memories do not exist and only one person can have a memory at a time. Those people are like Jonas and Gabriel, which have the special and rare lightly colored eyes.

Whenever Jonas had just turned twelve he found out he would become the new receiver, and have all the memories. He would sometimes get bad memories like sunburn and bee stings, but at the end of the day he would always get happy memories like snow and rainbows. The memories were very important to the giver but Jonas didn’t know why because he was unsure of what memories were. He never knew what he would encounter in his job, which made him very nervous and scared to mess everything up.

Jonas then gets the capacity to see beyond, which is to see colors. This is a very important memory because no one else in the community can see colors except for Jonas. The first color he saw was red. I know this because the text states that

He enjoyed these memories very much because they made him happy. Jonas already knew that people from the house of the old and babies got released but he didn’t know what it meant. He knew he could ask the giver anything so he asked him to see a release. This was the worst memory yet because he had to see people get killed just like the memory of war. He was very mad to know what happened when people got released I know this because on page 151 the text states that “Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside himself, the feeling of terrible pain clawing its way forward to emerge in a cry.” He was then forced †o run away with Gabriel so he also wouldn’t get
