In The Giver, Jonas– a boy who lives in a community where everything is the same–
makes very few choices, and because there are no choices, there is no pain, fear, war, or hatred.

“The Receiver” is someone whose job is to keep the sole collective memory of the
community. (s) When the community evolved into the state of “sameness”, it became painless,
warless, and in a state of tranquility and harmony. (cx) The community forgot all the memories
of these emotions, but the memories could not disappear totally. (cx) Someone has to keep the
memories so that the community does not make the same mistakes of the past. (s) Jonas is the
chosen one to receive all these memories of the past, the good and bad from the current
“Receiver”. (cp) Jonas called the old man “The Giver”. (s) The Giver placed his bare hands on
Jonas’ back, as he did this his first memory was of a fast exciting sled ride, then millions of
memories started invading Jonas’ mind.(cc) It was exhilarating, they were coming to him so fast,
memories of laughter, joy, pleasure, and excitement, but also memories of pain, sorrow, terror,
hunger and suffering. (cc) He also showed Jonas about love, and what family really meant. (s)
