Into the Wild is a travel essay written and narrated by Jon Krakauer about Christopher Johnson McCandless also known as Alexander Supertramp before and during his journey to Alaska to his death. Before his journey, they describe the relationship he had with his family and how he was as a child to a young adult. During the adventure, Krakauer writes about the people he met while hitchhiking, such as Jan Burres and Wayne Westerberg, and the overall overview of his journey from Arizona to Alaska. After his death, his story was published in Outside magazine and received a numerous amount of media attention that mostly was people commentating that he was a reckless idiot, crazy, and narcissist or admiring him for his courageous and noble ideas.

When Chris traveled to the El Segundo neighborhood, he found out answers about some questions he had about his father’s previous marriage. “Long after falling in love with Billie, long after she gave birth to Chris, Walt continued his relationship with Marcia in secret, dividing his time between two households, two families” (Krakauer 121). It means that due to this tragic event, he knew that he couldn’t trust his father anymore and should run away from his problems. Unlike many others, if a problem comes their way that they can’t control, they decide to either face it head on or ignore it, because they know deep down that if they decide to leave their home they won’t be able to survive since they don’t have the skills that would actually help them. In conclusion, my final assessment about Chris McCandless after reading Into the Wild is that he is a reckless idiot. He is someone who doesn’t care about the people close to him, so unprepared for the wild, and trying to escape the problems that were brought up upon him. By being a reckless idiot, it shows that many things could have been prevented if he had the help and care that he needed. If you decide to do something that you think would not affect somebody else, rethink that, because everything you do has an effect on someone
