One of the passages that Chris read that was super important not only because it was highlighted but also because the passage had been written on, “need for a purpose” had been written right above it. “...You had to learn how to walk by yourself. There was no one around...You need to surrender to some such ultimate purpose more fully, more unreservedly than you had ever done in the old familiar, peaceful days, in the old life that was now abolished and gone for good”, Krakauer (103) and what the author was suggesting here was to just let everything go and find out who you really are. Chris interpreted this on another extreme level, he wanted to be out on his own and find his purpose in his life, to find out who he really is. Out there in the wild or whether he was just out there in a city doing his own thing, he was alone and that’s what he really wanted he was happy because no one could lie to him or hurt him. And what he wanted in life was to be truly happy. On page 56-57 Chris writes in a letter to Franz, “ So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation…”.
