This quote symbolizes the Joliet Cyborgs 4241 mission is to empower students regardless of their background. We inspire our students to problem solve, cooperate as a team, communicate with others, and develop technical skills that are applicable to their future careers. Through the mindset that everyone is capable of achieving their dreams, we have grown as individuals, as a team, and as a community. In contrast, Joliet Township High School’s graduation rate is around 80% and only 30% of graduating students continue their education. Our alumni frequently return to share wisdom with our newer members. Our team leader from three years ago, Amanda Marshall, was the team leader during FIRST Recycle Rush; after graduating high school in 2015, Amanda is working hard to earn her Architecture degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. Amanda says that FRC helped her see the fun of working on a project and not getting hung up on who wins or who is the best. She believes that being involved in FRC helped her developed teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills, all of which are incredibly important in any career field. Amanda states “It’s important to be able to work with a group of people and talk through an issue, or ask questions to understand what a client needs or how to solve their problem. FIRST has given us the means by which we can elevate what it means to engage with STEM in our community.
