The process of developing standards includes the following steps:
The emerging problems of quality and safety that suggest the need for additional or modified requirements are identified through the scientific literature or discussions with standing committees and advisory groups of the Joint Commission, accredited organizations, professional associations, consumer groups or others.
The Joint Commission prepares draft standards using input from technical advisory panels, focus groups, experts and other interested parties.
The draft standards are distributed at the national level for review and are made available for comments on the Review page of the standards field of the Joint Commission website.
