Local Project Experience

Joining the Local Project Team comes in two-folds for me. The first part is growing from the experience and second is create a camp environment to help the counselors, guides, staff, and participants see through the concept of what makes camp so special. Growing from the experience is a very integral part of being on the Local Project Team. Over the past year the process of the Local Project Team has helped me realize and learn a lot about myself. When applying for the position last fall I wanted to be on the team because I felt It would be a good experience for myself since I was good friends with those applying. When getting rejected it opened my eyes about how looking at the position of LPT as a role model and mentor for the entire camp …show more content…
My experience in and out of these camps will help me prepare for this role. I’ve been fortunate to be able to see camp as a participant in the West and Houston and be apart of the CGS in the West, Dallas, and ACCT region. These experiences helped teach and refine my skills overtime as I was able to experience working under every LPT member and in different positions in camp. When I was a guide in 2010 I was able to experience the logistics of camp and be able to help with a lot of the planning of content as the Skill Building Coordinator really had me use a lot of my prior knowledge in theatre to help with the content hooks. When I became a group counselor in 2012 I was able to really see camp from all the different perspectives and understand the importance of the content of camp and how to prepare for every area. When becoming a media coordinator in 2013 I had a different experience where I was behind the scenes and able to work with a lot of logistics and work under a hard deadline. In 2014 I moved to a new city for college and the summer before I started school I was able to do mosaic in the ACCT region where I was able to help serve as a leader in a region that only had a handful of experienced counselors. The Christiana Care VolunTeen program allows young adults to help serve at the hospital in various areas, often exposing teenagers to how a hospital operates. Specifically, I worked in the Outpatient Pharmacy, SurgiCenter, and Pathology/Histology Lab, assisting patients and doctors with their various needs and tasks.…

As a Fish Camp counselor I want to gain a stronger network through the entire camp and develop a bond with others beyond who I have met my first two semesters of college. I want to be a mentor for the next year freshman as they transition into college just like my DG-discussion group-parents did for me. I’d also like to develop my leadership qualities even further through the entire process. I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

While some people may think of event management as a degree in party planning, it is gaining credibility as a legitimate career. The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council created event management standards which also led to the definition of exactly what an event is (Robertson, 2015). An event is “a social form that organizes interaction in a distinctive way” or the “gathering of three or more people who agree to assemble for a purpose ostensibly related to the functioning of an organization or group” (Beaulie, 2004). According to Michael Auerbach, “in 2006 there were 51,000 event planners in the U.S. and 39% of those were within an event planning company” which demonstrates the grand size of the industry and its obvious importance to society (2015). The purpose of this paper is to explore a career in event planning.…
