Joining NSCS

Improved Essays
Many factors play in to having success during college. From studying to networking, everything has a purpose during the four years of college and every action taken has a purpose. Joining NSCS gave me benefits and opportunities that wouldn’t have been offered to me without them. For starters, NSCS is one of the main contributors to success in college through scholarship and career opportunities. Although this is the easiest benefit given to members, it should not be overlooked or taken for granted. The amount of money and time that leaders of NSCS sacrifice to focus on motivated, bright members, like myself, shows the organization’s morale standards. The organization tolerates nothing but the best college students and those willing to take …show more content…
The element of joining NSCS that can’t be accounted for on paper is the ability to make my family proud. Being a first generation college student and being honored with affiliating myself with The National Society of Collegiate Scholars gives them a sense of happiness that is not tangible. That happiness that I bring them can’t be taken away from them and it is because of the NSCS that it is possible. To come from a family that didn’t put a large emphasis on education, to self-motivating myself to earn a 3.75 GPA through two semesters at the 52nd ranked best university nationally, allows my family to fall asleep at night knowing the raised a young man that has no limits. My mother now has the opportunity to flaunt my success to her peers and show me off, not only does that reflect well on me, but it reflects well on my family and shows that a single mother can raise an intelligent, young man capable of anything he sets his mind to. My limitations are endless and that doesn’t just come from my self-reliance, it comes from the NSCS and their ability as an organization to offer me exclusive opportunities I could have never dreamed about

Community is important to me. I grew up in a small town where you knew your neighbors, and chances were that you lived down the street from at least one of your teachers. Where every summer Saturday, the entire block would meet in somebody’s backyard- a fire would be lit, and all of us kids would roast marshmallows and hotdogs, and play on the wooden swing-set, playing out stories and adventures. My community wasn’t just a place where I lived and went to school- it was a family.…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…
