John's Use Of The Greek Word Logos In John

Improved Essays
John uses the translation of the Greek term Logos, “Word” to describe Jesus’ pre-birth existence in heaven before he came to earth and God’s infinite wisdom personified. In John, Jesus is the human form of God’s heavenly Word, the cosmic expression of divine Wisdom by which God created the universe (Harris 2015). Logos can mean anything from a divine statement to the principle of cosmic reason, a force that oversees and governs the entire universe (Harris, 2015). John diden’t speak of Jesus’ physical birth, but of Christ turning to flesh, or a spiritual Logos.
John’s use of the Greek term logos connects Jesus with the creation account of Genesis, for example when he states “When all things began,” it is recalling God’s command from the creation

The Book of John is foundational to the Christian faith. As a foremost document declaring the deity of Jesus, the text decisively establishes that He is God. Contained in the book, there are clear declarations by Jesus where He uses the name of God for Himself. By using the Old Testament name of God, “I AM,” Jesus is speaking in a style that presents Himself as deity. One place where this testimony is undisputable is in the description of the Good Shepherd.…

Upon reading the given reading from Mark Powell revealed several in points of interest on the topic of Christology. I discovered that Jesus as the central figure of the New Testament is spoken of in two different ways: The New Testament tells of a man names ‘Jesus’ who lived in Galilee and who said and did many remarkable things before being crucified. This representation is known as the earthly, historical figure of Jesus. And the New Testament also speaks of Jesus as an exalted, eternal figure, seated at the right hand of God and dwelling in hearts of those who believe in him. This distinction is important, as I did not know there was a difference and just how vital it is to be able to identify how Jesus is spoken of.…

John writes to a number of Christians who were experiencing troubling times of public suspicion, Jewish antagonism, imprisonment, and execution (Harris 2014, p.437). Research shows that some believers may have considered rejecting Christ, due to the orders from Pliny to comply with the standards of Roman society. As a result, John uses his visions of cosmic conflict to strengthen those whose faith was unsteady due to the universal struggle between good and evil. Also, John’s motive was to convince the people that death is a victorious occurrence instead of a happening that encourages defeat. Interestingly, John’s visions cause a sense of urgency to reveal the swift approaching future.…

Introduction And He Dwelt Among Us: Teachings from the Gospel of John, by Pastor A.W. Tozer, was compiled from a series of sermons on the Gospel of John he had given over a year. These sermons were compiled and edited by James L. Snyder. Snyder notes, that “Tozer believed that John represented the best of the ‘mystical’ thinkers and along with the doctrinal emphasis of the apostle Paul these two provided the kind of spiritual experience that was healthy for maturing Christians.” Tozer, who many considered to be a modern-day prophet, served as a pastor with the Christian and Missionary Alliance for forty-four years.…

John’s Background John was called by Jesus when he was with his brother James on the shores of Galilee. This calling occurred early in Jesus’ Ministry (John Exiled, 2013). The brothers were fishermen by trade, and preparing to cast their nets when Jesus called them. The story is recorded in Matthew 4, and reports that after the Lord’s call, they immediately left their nets and their father, and went and followed Him (Holy Bible, NIV, 2016). We are not certain if John heard about Jesus ministry from verbal reports of John the Baptist’s teaching, or if he was drawn to the Lord by the influence of the Holy Spirit alone.…

Jesus’ identity and purpose has been a great source of discussion and investigation through the years. Although many people do not seem to believe in the importance and legacy of His life, there are many profs and facts that show the meaning of His days physically living in our world.
