Post his affair with Abigail he attempts to save his relationship with his wife. He does this because first he feels bad and realizes he messed up and he is now also seen as a cheater and a liar. On Page 133 Proctor says “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” In this quote he is saying that he has one life, and in this one life he has one name. He asked why he should live without his name, when you only get one in a lifetime. He considers confession because he already is seen so horribly throughout the town. He then realizes that he would rather die with a reputation of a non witch then just admit. He chooses to die rather with a good reputation than live with a bad one.
To conclude, The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an American play that has famously showed what the Salem witch trials were. The theme of reputation is within the novel, along with many others. I chose reputation because as I read the book I was surprised with the ending, finding out that John Proctor literally died for his name and reputation. However, he perfectly shows that within a large problem there are smaller equally as challenging problems. I think, although he does this he is highlighting the main theme which is reputation throughout the whole novel, and the history of
