The most terrifying sentence of John’s childhood was, “wait until your father sees this!” This sentence, emitted by his mother, immediately sent chills down his spine, a knot in his stomach, and a lump in his throat. He very well knew a punishment was underway. The wretched sentence followed the rare occasion he received a school grade that didn’t quite meet the well-known expectation of his household. John was raised under the notion being well-educated identifies as having earned high grades throughout grade school and high school and having obtained a college degree. As John’s horizons broadened with age, he came to understand the term “well-educated” was simply relative and held a variety of definitions distinctive to one’s life. During this time John would assist with organizing papers and cleaning the office with Rose. Rose was a twenty-year-old woman with Down syndrome. Rose was hired two years ago by John’s dad to work part-time as an assistant around the office. She had studied diligently with a burning desire and worked hard every day to earn a high school diploma. After high school graduation she was eager to start her first job and excel doing it. Rose was indeed an excellent employee. She listened attentively, followed directions to assigned tasks, and completed work efficiently and effectively. John deeply admired her for the willingness to learn and desire for additional work opportunities. Rose had taken her education and applied it to her profession. To John, John’s father, and Rose herself, she was well-educated. John recognized she had done the very best she could regardless of any
