Clinical Context & Experience I completed my final two shifts on 11/24 and 12/1 at Sharp. The unit had a pretty large census both nights, so we were fairly busy both nights. During this shift I had to notify the doctor twice and felt the most relevant journal topic was advocacy. The first night I had three patients which included a 84 year old man who sustained a hip and right shoulder/humerous fracture from a fall at home and a history of HTN, CKD, MI with coronary stent placement, and diabetes, an 86 year old woman admitted for rapid A-fib with history of TIA, HTN, CHF, and rheumatoid arthritis, and finally a 35 year old woman who was being discharged following her treatment for polynephritis. I’ve had the opportunity of completing my clinical rotation at Baptist Hospital with the medical team in which I've observed the different participants in the collaborative team and the specific role each person played. The team consists of physicians, surgeons, social worker, ARNP, physical therapist, and occupational therapist. While observing the team, the best outcome for the patient's treatment and prognosis is focused on before being discharged. My ambition to become a dentist and practice in underserved community clinics comes from my experiences living in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. My hometown, Los Fresnos, is between two of the poorest cities in America - Brownsville and Harlingen. This past summer, I expanded my medical knowledge by becoming a certified EMT. The course showed me a glimpse into parts of hands-on patient care that I was not exposed to in other settings. The program goals “include educating individuals to integrate the clinical data that they obtain from their medical history, physical examination, and laboratory analysis in order to form a differential diagnosis for the patient condition,” rather than simply relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. As an EMT, being exposed to various medical emergencies, I cherish the uniqueness of each patient encounter. Though some health emergencies are similar in terms of diagnosis and treatment, the circumstances and concerns of each patient differs and thus your care must be tailored to provide optimal treatment, which can ultimately mean the difference between a patient’s life and death. Giving my best care coupled with a positive, compassionate and comforting approach can mean so much to a patient as they go through one of the toughest times in their life. By aiding and treating different injuries and illnesses, I have come to appreciate and also be grateful for the little things I usually take for granted.
