In the beginning of the Outsiders, Ponyboy is a caring and sensitive teenager. He is smarter than the rest of his gang, which includes his two brothers and four of his other friends. His oldest brother, Darry, has high expectations for Ponyboy. He tries to follow the rules unlike some of his other friends. An example of him trying to follow the rules is when Johnny wanted to tell the police about how Johnny killed Bob to defend Ponyboy who was drowning.
Towards the middle of the book, Ponyboy is scared. He and Johnny are alone without the rest of their gang. Their barely have any food or water and aren't at home with their families. Even though he decided, to run away from home because Darry hit him for staying out too late. He still misses
