Johnny Dawson: A First Person Narrative

Decent Essays
I chose to write a first person narrative in the perspective of Johnny Dawson when him and George were at the ranch. Johnny Dawson is George Dawson’s younger brother, and went along with George and his wife Elzenia to a ranch. George had seen some white cowboys having trouble breaking a horse, and they began beating the horse. George felt bad for the horse and asked them to give him a try. He was successful with breaking the horse, but he knew soon after that he would be in trouble with the cowboys. George always knew to stay clear of trouble with the white folk, and this time he crosses the line. Johnny went into the arena to help protect George from the angry white men. Jasper Jones is an award winning novel written by Craig Silvey, first published in 2009. After reading the first one hundred pages, the novel has left a positive influence on me. I have enjoyed reading the text so far. Within the novel, Craig Silvey uses real life experiences which he encountered growing up on an orchard in Western Australia in order to craft the context and Australian setting within Jasper Jones. Jasper Jones is set in Corrigan in 1965, and it follows the protagonist Charlie Bucktin, a white, skinny boy who wears glasses through his journey of solving a suspected murder and growing up in society.…

Even though I do not remember many things from my childhood, I remember the moment when I met Melvin Miller very clearly. I was only five, and when I walked up to him for the first time I had no clue he would change my life forever. My first moment with Melvin was watching him lay tile. I watched as he very eloquently placed each piece of porcelain and grout on the floor in a way that I had never seen before. I was immediately captivated.…

Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

The function of a narrator in any story is to do just that, to narrate the story. However, skilled authors realize that narrators do so much more than simply narrate: they are an essential component of how the story is expressed. Decisions such as having a third person, first person, or omniscient narrator are critical to point of view. In the case of this story, if the narrator had been Sonny himself, the story would be significantly one dimensional; having the brother narrate provides a powerful basis for comparison of life in Harlem. In the short story “Sonny’s Blues”, James Baldwin uses Sonny’s brother, the narrator, to add a layer of meaning to the story that would not exist if the story were told from a third person point of view.…
