Johnny Curtain Analysis

Johnny Tremain was a very stubborn boy and for the most part was definitely not a good person to emulate. He let his pride get in the way of him getting relief for his burned hand. Watch and learn from his mistakes and victories and don’t do what he did to Dr. Warren and storm out of the doctor’s office when he asks you about your injury. Johnny should have allowed Dr. Warren to operate on his burnt hand for three reasons: Dr. Warren showed himself to be a competent surgeon, Johnny needed the surgery in order to fulfill his career path as a silver smith, and Johnny lost his sense of pride and dignity when he lost the use of his hand.

As an apprentice, Johnny had already trained for four years as a silver smith, becoming exceptionally talented at his trade. He excelled over the other apprentices in his shop. Renowned silver smith and patriot Paul Revere had already noticed Johnny’s skill and offered to buy his apprenticeship from Mr. Lapham. Warren to work a miracle on his hand is Johnny lost his sense of pride and dignity when he lost the use of his hand. Mr. Lapham saw that Johnny’s pride was a character flaw. Losing the use of his hand and becoming deeply humbled by his incident. In spite of his humiliation and change of fortune, Johnny found new purpose in life by becoming a rider and serving his fletching country. Rab’s friendship and influence on Johnny was a direct result of this injury. Johnny redeemed the lesson for which God sent his test. Johnny learned to live with humility and to care about others. Dr. Warren’s surgery offered him freedom to hold his head up high again.
