“I think the best lessons we can teach people are the one’s that we live with our lives.” From an early age, Johnathan Johnson was considered a teacher of sorts. “I have been preaching since I was 14 years old.”

He looks at this as a time of character building. “This was a reflective moment. It was a vulnerable moment in fact, which to me, is not a bad thing. It was a vulnerable moment that let people see, if preacher of all people is feeling bad about this, If he’s got these questions, it’s okay for us to feel this pain.”

A good friend and fellow pastor, Toddrick Johnson, gave Johnathan some advice during a conversation that he says stuck with

Romans 8:38-39 says it well; “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The practice of ministry has only proven to strengthen that belief. I was called early Saturday morning to sit with a family who had just learned of the death of their daughter/granddaughter in a vehicle accident.…

It was already almost noon and ridiculously hot, the way it only is in august, in that strange in-between space before the end of summer break. Lisa counted the ridges of the sidewalk that blurred past underneath the wheels of her skateboard, vaporwave leaking out of berry-pink headphones. She knew the path by heart, and didn't really bother snapping out of her midsummer reverie. Most of her friends were still vacationing somewhere, but at least that gave Lisa the time to fly through the suburbs, thinking up stories for the strangers that lived in the pastel houses and draw vibrant flowers and cute quotes on the blistering sidewalks. It was a simple pastime, but it was fun.…
