The City of Waknuk and it’s Intolerance towards Deviations - The Chrysalids Waknuk is a very intolerant society that does not approve of people who do not fit in with the Nicholson’s Repentances rules. In the novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, it is proven that Waknuk is a prejudice society and, it’s people are very faithful to God just because they are afraid of him causing another Tribulation. Citizens of Waknuk strongly dislike Blasphemies and Offences because, they think that the Deviations are the reason that Tribulation is being caused. Wyndham provides many examples from the novel that proves the intolerance of Waknuk and how it’s citizens discriminate all of the deviations. Because Waknuk is very strict when it comes to the way an individual looks, physically and mentally, it leads them to destroy anything that is different.

It was because of David's kindness and gentleness was what lent him to a beating. David was only wiped by his father because he was trying to be a supportive friend, but that’s not what it’s about in Waknuk, it’s only about following the rules of Nicholson’s Repentances. Intolerance and non-acceptance was not only shown towards Sophie but also to Aunt Harriet when she was mistreated by her own sister, Emily.
Furthermore, the Strorm’s were definitely the main family in Waknuk that was faithful and loving towards God. With David’s parents, God was their number one priority and they didn’t treasure their families as much as they did God, it was always God that took over the love of family. Aunt Harriet, who is Emily’s own sister was turned down by her. The Chrysalids Essay Author: John Wyndham In the novel, the Chrysalids written by John Wyndham, the sea land woman justifies the killing of the Fringe people and the Waknuk posse by explaining that their society is too violent and primitive to allow them to exist. It would not allow the natural evolution of the species, and killing the “Thought Makers” would not allow that evolution. I agree that the Sea land women was right about how the Waknuk people could not be allowed to hinder the evolution of the species, but I also think that killing the Waknuk posse and the fringes people was wrong and unnecessary.…

In the novel The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, there are many examples of how hypocrisy, bigotry and ignorance are evident in David’s society. People in Waknuk, including the main character, David, are ignorant to the world around them. Through the first few chapters of the novel, David is a prime example of ignorance, being so young and having a lack of knowledge on what Deviations are actually like. Bigotry is also evident in the Waknuk society, and Joseph Strorm is a prime example of that. Finally, in chapter four, we see an example of hypocrisy through David’s uncle.…

The children’s book Chrysanthemum written by Kevin Henkes is a classic piece of literature with an essential meaning within. Using the simple moral of the Golden Rule, Henkes shows this through the adventures of a mouse in a very social oriented time in children’s lives, pre-school. By using realistic fiction to depict a normal child’s experience through school, Henkes shows the ups and downs of having differences through the 13 letter name of the protagonist, Chrysanthemum. Even though the vocabulary is simple for matured ones, it is a new world for young ones using words such as “blushed” and others such as “bloomed” when used as a feeling. The book Chrysanthemum begins with Chrysanthemum growing up with love and affection from her parents.…

Your analysis of Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World, regarding scale and proportion was interesting to read. According to our class reading this week, Professor Tessier explained that “proportion is the size of a part in relation to the whole” (Tessier, 2017). You mentioned proportion in the painting regarding Christina being the largest object in the art work. My observation regarding proportion in this artwork was the vast size of the field in relation to the distance between Christina and the small farmhouse. My interpretation of the vast field was that, Andrew Wyeth wanted to create a sense of isolation between Christina and the farmhouse.…
