Birth, the passageway into this cruel and unforgiving world, in John Wesley Hardin’s case. John Wesley Hardin was born in 1853 near Bonham, Texas. His parents were named James Hardin and Elizabeth Dixson. His name came from John Wesley, the founder of methodist denomination of Christianity. John was sadly only the second surviving son out of ten others. He was one of the lucky ones, but his luck would soon turn.
John went to school like any other kid. John’s father, James Hardin was a teacher at the school that John and his siblings went to. A man called Judge Moore held Hardin’s stakes of money and a pistol and refused to give them up. But to everyone’s surprise Judge Moore just vanished and no one ever heard from him again. John later admitted to killing him. After killing Judge Moore, Hardin claimed that a posse of fifteen men came after him. Hardin captured two of the men and got a shotgun, two six shooters, a rifle, and two derringers from his captives. He told the two captives to go back to the posse. Later that month, January 20 in Horn Hill, Hardin killed a man in a gunfight after the circus. Less than a week after the incident, in a nearby Kosse, Hardin was accompanying a saloon girl home when they were accosted by her pimp who demanded money. Hardin threw the money on the ground and as the pimp went to pick it up, John shot and killed the would-be thief. Later in January 1871, Hardin was arrested for the murder of the Waco, Texas city Marshal, Laban John Hoffman. Hardin denied the murder of Hoffman but was found guilty anyway. While in prison John bought a revolver off of another prisoner. On the way to his trial, he escaped the officers on a horse. After the incident John went to live with his cousins in Gonzales, in south Texas. While Hardin was staying with them John and them had an argument and John hit his cousins over the head with a pistol. In October 1871, John got into a gunfight with two special officers
