I chose to do the presentation on John because I want to learn more about the medications that he takes, especially Lithium. He had trouble maintaining his levels and has an increase in psychotic episodes.
John has been diagnosed with Developmental Delay, Schizoaffective Disorder, Osteoporosis, Bi-Polar Disorder, and Diabetes.
John has recently had lab work done to test his Lithium levels. His levels were low. This resulted in a relapse, with John having episodes of bizarre, and sometimes violent, behaviours. He would threaten to punch, or even kill people. Schizoaffective disorder is where the person experiences many symptoms of Schizophrenia. The symptoms can run in cycles personal to the individual. They can start off with being severe, followed by an improvement of lesser symptoms. John’s behaviours have improved greatly with the increase dose of Lithium, but with the increase, we are noticing that he is very tired and weak again. He is experiencing some of the symptoms of Lithium toxicity and is being tested. The counsellor is continuing to monitor his levels with blood tests and medical consultations. The test are required to find the right dosage for John’s physical, as well as, his behaviour needs.
John copes quite well with his day to day lifestyle, when his medication levels are good. He attends day program, and enjoys doing many activities that they offer. John enjoys living at the Lodge. He loves listening to the Beatles and Elvis, also watching old movies, such as
