Today in class we spent an extensive amount of time discussing John Updike’s short piece “Beer Can,” which explores the transition to pull-tab beer cans to replace the flat punch-top cans. I found it assuming that someone could be so passionate and nostalgic in discussing a beer can, an item that is seemingly conventional and normal. In his discussion of the beer can he used many positively charged words to emphasize the simplicity of the beer can. I found it amusing how he was lamenting the death of the old style of the beer can which most people saw as a hassle or pain to deal with. Updike in his piece has used a combination of intellectual and casual language to help create a lighthearted and playful tone that would appear to be relatable
