"A&P" is a short story by John Updike, the story is basically a coming of newness story where the protagonist Sammy acts a childish decision that he trusts is a mature thing to do. He demonstrates his inexperience from his judgmental attitude. For instance, when Sammy continually mentions to the customers like “the ewes are walking with shopping trolleys along the aisle,” (748) implying that they are uncritically happening each other and that they are not intelligent. In addition, when he refers to his partners’ stances approaching the girls, he seems to blame them, but he forgets that he also does do the same thing, for instance, when he observes McMahon “estimate their joints, he says he feels sorry for the girls (748)”.
