Did you know that John Updike wrote a 70 page mystery story when he was only 14 years old? He said that he wanted to be recognized while he was still living. This is why he worked so hard to get published at an early age. There are many other reasons why they should keep his place in the literary canon for today and future generations. One example of this is his story called “Too Far to Go.” Peter Donahue analyzes Updike’s story and says, “The Maples ' marriage at first treats alcohol as a social prop that helps define gender roles, then as a failed attempt to mask pain, and finally as a contributing factor in destroying their marriage” (361). In this story, he teaches important lessons about the dangers of alcohol. They are so drunk that they don’t know what they are doing. In the end, they crash their car and that leads to the break up in their marriage. He is teaching that people should think before they do anything, and drinking and driving is just one example. John Updike should be remembered for future generations because he can even use an unpleasant story to teach people a better way for their life.
John Updike also uses positive stories to educate the reader. His themes are universal so anyone can relate to them. In a story call “A&P,” John Updike’s theme was that people should improve as the world gets more modern. This is one of his stories which contains an upbeat mood. This is true because in “A&P” Sammy does some funny things when he describes the queen and the other two girls. Readers should learn from Sammy’s positive actions like when he follows his dreams.
